Where to stay at Disney World - on or off?

We are a group of 6 adults and 2 children (grandparents, parents and kids) and are debating - do we stay onsite or offsite? Onsite, the benefits are evident but expensive. Offsite, we could get the separate bedrooms we want (at least 4). What are your thoughts? We have no problem with removing ourselves from the magic for some time each day to recharge and such. We've priced out a rental van or even two cars and it's still very much cheaper to rent a gorgeous house that accommodate us and making meals than if we were to stay in a villa on Disney grounds. I welcome your thoughts!

Yes it would be a lot cheaper to stay off site, but your already spending alot of money so why not spend a little more. Staying on site is so much fun, the resorts have stuff for you to do all the time. It also still has the magical disney feel, even while your in your room. Plus you wouldnt have to rent a car because they can pick you up at the airport, take you from your resort to the parks, and then take you back to the airport when you leave. Staying at a disney resort is just somthing i would suggest you shouldnt miss out on.

It depends on what type of vacation you're planning to have. If you're seriuosly doing the park thing, you will not have time to do any amenities at the resort. You only need a room to sleep. If it's a relaxation vacation, where you will spend all day at the hotel, then stay in Disney. I feel that your going the right direction. You're probably thinking
(I'm paying for a hotel that will be unused all day). If that's the case, stay off property, save the money, and you'll have more money to spend at the parks, where you'll be all the time. The free transportation story, is all a hype. Free ride to resorts, if you don't mind riding with 40 other people, making all kinds of stops like a shuttle, and having a minimum 90 minute ride( Cabs take 20 minutes to property). And to top it off, your luggage is transported separately. As far as buses on property, same deal, wait, wait, wait. If you have all the time in the world, then use the free transport. The free transport from and to airport, is called Magical Express(Disney buses, operated by contracted co., not Disney employees). I invite you to search goggle for reviews posted for this service. They are not the best reviews I've ever seen, especially for free service!!!

If it's a money issue, OFF. If money is not an issue, ON.

Here are a couple of things to keep in mind:
    1. Pool heat- When renting a private pool home you are more than likely going to have to pay for pool heat unless it is an unusually hot Christmas. This will add anywhere from $25 to $40 per day to your rental price.
    2. Meals- Going out to eat at Disney World is going to cost you 20% to 30% more than if you ate at a restaurant offsite.

My suggestion if money is any issue is to stay in a 4 bedroom townhome. You might want to look at Emerald Island, Encantada, Terra Verde or Regal Palms. The benefit here is that they have the space are desiring plus they have community pools (so you don't have to pay for pool heat). Hope this information is helpful.
